Cameo is a method of engraving or carving in low relief on a stone or engraved gem. It usually features a raised (positive) relief image; contrast with intaglio, which has a negative image. Most modern cameos are carved into layered agate stones. The layers are dyed to form strong color contrast. By carefully removing layers of the topmost color, cameo artists can create shadows and lifelike qualities.
